Old Terracotta Deep Strip and Deep Cleaning in Newbury, Berkshire
These pictures were taken on a Terracotta Floor that we stripped layers of old dirty seals from and deep cleaned to reveal the beautiful natural colours. The kitchen and hallway floors were transformed. As we often see with Terracotta floors, the previous owner had applied multiple layers of seals over the dirty floor to seal in and trap the dirt within.
This Terracotta floor was a big challenge. There were multiple layers to be stripped off. You can see in the pictures the difference between the stripped area showing the natural reds and oranges Terracotta is so well known for against the dirty brown terracotta floor that was in the Kitchen and Hallway when they purchased the house.
The job was made slightly more challenging as they had installed a brand new kitchen before we were approached to sort the floor. We worked carefully and protected their new kitchen from damage. We approached the job with both chemical strippers and machinery with carbide brushes and pads to strip back the years of dirt and coatings.
Once the layers of dirty seals had been removed from the floor, the floor was treated to our deep cleaning process. Using a combination of Alkaline, Acid and Ph Neutral cleaning solutions suitable for Terracotta and our rotary machines the floor was deep cleaned and looking great again. These floors are incredibly porous so after the cleaning the floor is left to dry out before a suitable protection can be applied.
Now the cleaning part is finished and the floor is dry we can look to apply products to help keep it looking great. This client loved the natural look of the Terracotta and didn’t want any sacrificial coatings applied. We opted for the protection of a solvent based impregnator that has smaller molecules to provide great resistance to water and oil based spills. The impregnator provides great protection from within whilst having little difference to the look of the floor and keeping it as natural as possible. The product doesn’t wear through walkways leaving an inconsistent look such as a wax dressing would over time. The Terracotta tiles were treated to multiple applications as Terracotta can be like a sponge.
